On Friday, August 21, the restored Goodis documentary plays — and then we keep going. Actors take a scene from UNDERBELLY, my new noir, and read it out loud: a cab driver, a runaway, a gun, and rain that will not let up.
That is how this kind of writing gets made. You put it on the page, then you put it in front of people and hear it in somebody else’s mouth, and you find out in about thirty seconds what is working and what you were kidding yourself about. New noir, born the way the old stuff was — out loud.
