BELOVED SON AND BROTHER — and that’s all it says

This is where David Goodis is buried, in a Philadelphia cemetery. The stone reads BELOVED SON AND BROTHER. That’s all it says. No “writer.” No “novelist.” No mention of Dark Passage or Shoot the Piano Player, no nod to the fact that France calls him a master of American noir. Just a flat marker for a man his own country forgot to name.
It’s the closing image of my restored documentary, Retracing the Footsteps of David Goodis — the last thing you see after walking every block of his city with him. I left it there on purpose. A life that poured millions of words into the dark, remembered in three of them.
The premiere is our correction. One night to say out loud everything that stone leaves off.
It premieres live on Zoom, Friday, August 21 at 7:30pm CT — co-hosted by Lou Boxer of NoirCon, closing with a live table read of Ed’s new noir UNDERBELLY.
